Project: Live Sports Fan Zone (Tennis & Winter Olympics)
Client: Westfield Plenty Valley
Delivered by: Big Room Audio Visual
Bringing the Global Stage to the Local Community
Nothing brings a community together quite like live sports. When Westfield Plenty Valley wanted to transform their outdoor precinct into a high-energy Fan Zone for the summer Tennis tournaments and the Winter Olympics, they needed an audiovisual solution that was robust, engaging, and hands-off for center management.
They called on Big Room Audio Visual to design and deploy a complete, weatherproof broadcast system. The goal was simple: create an immersive viewing experience for shoppers and fans, while seamlessly integrating Westfield’s promotional content during the downtime. Here is how we brought the action to life.
The Big Room AV Solution
Creating a temporary outdoor broadcast hub in a busy shopping center requires a blend of high-end technology, rigorous safety standards, and smart automation.
Here is a breakdown of the custom ground-stack solution we deployed for the campaign:
- High-Impact Ground-Stacked LED: We constructed a custom ground-stacked LED screen designed to deliver crystal-clear, daylight-viewable action. A ground stack was chosen to eliminate the need for heavy, intrusive rigging, keeping the footprint clean and integrated beautifully into the Westfield precinct.
- IP-Rated Outdoor Audio: Great sports need great sound. We installed premium IP-rated outdoor speakers that punched through ambient crowd noise while withstanding the unpredictable elements, ensuring every grunt on the tennis court and scrape of ice on the slopes was heard loud and clear.
- Custom Antenna Installation: To guarantee a flawless, zero-lag broadcast of the live events, we installed a dedicated free-to-air TV antenna, directly patching the live network feeds into the screen’s video processor.
“From the scorching heat of the Australian summer tennis to the snowy peaks of the Winter Olympics, our setup ran flawlessly, rain or shine.”
Smart Automation and Remote Management
A key requirement for Westfield was that the screen needed to operate autonomously without requiring daily input from their local staff.
- Day/Night Auto-Brightness: LED screens that look great at noon can be blindingly bright at night. We programmed automated brightness sensors that smoothly adjusted the screen’s output based on ambient light, ensuring maximum visibility during the day and comfortable viewing in the evening.
- Automated Scheduling: The system was programmed with strict on/off schedules to align with the center’s trading hours and local noise ordinances.
- Remote Content Management: What happens when the games are on a commercial break or the day’s events are over? We implemented a remote content management system (CMS). This allowed our team to seamlessly mix in Westfield’s bespoke advertising and center promotions during broadcast downtime. We handled all content updates remotely throughout the multi-week campaign, giving center management complete peace of mind.
Engineered for Absolute Safety
In a high-traffic public space like Westfield Plenty Valley, safety is the ultimate priority. The entire ground-stacked LED structure was fully engineered and signed off to meet strict wind-rating and public safety standards. Heavy-duty ballast and secure structural framing meant the screen remained rock-solid, even during unexpected weather events.
